Water Resistance Ratings Explained — What 30M, 50M, 100M Actually Mean

Water Resistance Ratings Explained — What 30M, 50M, 100M Actually Mean

You've seen "30M Water Resistant" on watch dials. But can you actually swim 30 meters deep with it? The answer might surprise you.

The Truth About Water Resistance Ratings

The numbers don't mean "depth" — they mean "pressure resistance under static conditions in a lab." Real-world use is very different.

Rating Lab Pressure Real-World Suitability
30M (3 ATM) 3 bar Splash-proof only. No swimming, no rain exposure.
50M (5 ATM) 5 bar Light swimming in shallow water. No diving or high-impact water sports.
100M (10 ATM) 10 bar Swimming, snorkeling, and recreational water sports. Not for scuba diving.
200M+ (20 ATM+) 20+ bar Scuba diving and professional water use.

⚠️ What Kills Water Resistance

  • Heat: Hot showers and saunas expand the air inside, breaking gasket seals. Steam is far more damaging than liquid water.
  • Aging: Rubber gaskets dry out after 1–2 years. Get them tested annually if you swim regularly.
  • Crown left unscrewed: The most common cause of water damage. Always check your crown is fully pushed in and/or screwed down before water contact.

How to Test If Your Watch Is Waterproof

Don't put it in water to "test." Bring it to a watch shop. They have a pressure tester that simulates depth conditions without risk.

Can You Shower with a 100M Watch?

Technically yes. But the soap, hot water, and steam degrade the gaskets over time. We recommend taking it off before showering regardless of rating — it's not worth the risk.

Pro Tip: If your watch has condensation under the crystal, it means water already got in. Remove the crown immediately and place the watch in a bowl of rice for 24 hours, then take it to a repair shop.
