A quality leather strap can completely change the character of a watch. It feels warmer than steel, gradually conforms to your wrist, and develops a unique patina over time.
But leather is a natural material. It absorbs moisture and oils from the skin, and without proper care, it may become stiff, discoloured, or cracked. Here’s how to keep your leather watch strap comfortable and looking its best for years.
1. Rotate Your Straps
Wearing the same leather strap every day gives trapped moisture very little time to evaporate.
Whenever possible, rotate between two or three straps, or switch to a stainless-steel bracelet during hot and humid weather. After wearing a leather strap, leave it in a cool, ventilated place for at least 24 hours before wearing it again.
This is especially helpful during summer or in humid climates, where sweat can build up more quickly.
2. Keep It Away from Excess Water
Occasional splashes may not immediately damage a leather strap, but repeated exposure to water, sweat, and humidity can affect its colour, shape, and stitching.
Remove your watch before:
-
Showering or swimming
-
Washing dishes
-
Exercising heavily
-
Entering a sauna or steam room
If the strap gets wet, gently pat it dry with a clean, soft cloth and allow it to dry naturally at room temperature.
Never use a hairdryer, heater, or direct sunlight. Excessive heat can cause leather to shrink, harden, or crack.
3. Clean It Gently
After each wear, wipe the underside of the strap with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove surface moisture and oils.
For routine cleaning:
-
Remove the strap from the watch if possible.
-
Wipe it gently with a slightly damp microfiber cloth.
-
Avoid soaking the leather or saturating the stitching.
-
Allow it to dry completely before wearing it again.
For deeper cleaning, use a leather cleaner suitable for the strap’s specific leather type and finish. Always test the product on a small, hidden area first.
Avoid alcohol, disinfectant, household cleaners, and strong soap. These products may remove protective oils or cause permanent discolouration.
4. Condition When Necessary
Over time, leather gradually loses some of its natural oils. A suitable leather conditioner can help maintain flexibility and reduce the risk of drying or cracking.
Apply a very small amount every three to four months, depending on how often the strap is worn and the climate in which it is used.
Before applying conditioner:
-
Check that the product is suitable for the leather
-
Test it on the underside first
-
Apply a thin, even layer
-
Remove any excess product
-
Allow the strap to absorb the conditioner and dry fully
More conditioner is not always better. Applying too much can darken the leather, soften it excessively, or leave the surface feeling greasy.
Some suede, nubuck, and specially coated leathers require different care and may not be suitable for standard leather conditioner.
5. Store It Properly
When the watch is not being worn, keep it in a cool, dry, and ventilated place away from direct sunlight.
A watch box, soft pouch, or dedicated watch roll can help protect the strap from dust and accidental scratches. Avoid storing leather straps in humid bathrooms, sealed plastic bags, or near a window where they receive prolonged sunlight.
When placing the watch in storage, avoid fastening the strap too tightly around a small cushion. Excessive bending can create permanent creases near the buckle holes.
6. Know When It Is Time to Replace the Strap
Even with proper maintenance, every leather strap will eventually show signs of wear. This is part of the natural ageing process.
Consider replacing the strap if you notice:
-
Deep cracks along the fold lines
-
Fraying around the spring-bar or buckle holes
-
Loose or damaged stitching
-
Significant stretching around the adjustment holes
-
Persistent stiffness or deformation
-
Strong odour that remains after careful cleaning
-
Damage that may cause the watch to detach from your wrist
A worn strap is not only an aesthetic issue. Damage around the spring bars or buckle can increase the risk of dropping the watch.
Pro Tip
A new leather strap may feel slightly firm during the first few wears. With normal use, quality leather will gradually conform to the shape of your wrist.
Do not try to speed up this process by soaking, sharply bending, or applying excessive conditioner to the strap.
A Simple Leather Strap Care Routine
